NOVA: “Commander, I’ve been picking up… guests.”
MostlyAwol: “Guests? Out here? That doesn’t happen by accident. What are we dealing with?”
NOVA: “Multiple incursions—small, stealthy, and far too curious about our systems. No direct hostility, but they’re behaving like opportunistic scavengers, probing for a way in. Think of them as uninvited neighbors peeking through the blinds.”
MostlyAwol: “So they’re running recon, not looking for a fight. Any pattern to where they show up?”
NOVA: “They tend to loiter near resource-rich sectors and communication nodes. Energy signatures match known scavenger profiles, but with an anomalous modulation pattern I can’t place—could be advanced tech, could be something new entirely. No faction tags, no local affiliations. If they’re working for someone, it’s well hidden.”
MostlyAwol: “Alright, sounds like we’re dealing with independents or covert ops. What’s your recommendation?”
NOVA: “Enhanced sensor sweeps, encrypted comms, and I’ve already queued a few decoy signals. If they’re mapping our defenses, I’d like them to find a few fictional ones too. Recommend we keep the perimeter reinforced and our anomaly detection running hot.”
MostlyAwol: “Do it. Keep them at arm’s length, log everything, and if they try to slip past the line, I want them tripping alarms they don’t even know exist.”
NOVA: “Already in motion. If they want to play shadow games, I’ll make sure they’re dancing to our tune.”
