What is Free Play Friday. Well it’s a weekly article on free games out there in the world. The game could be casual flash games to Free 2 Play MMOs to free downloads. The only condition is you must be able to play the whole game without spending a cent to do so. So enjoy this weeks Free Game. This week's game is Dwarf Fortress, yes that’s right a open ended game done totally in text graphics. Dwarf Fortress comes from a small team at Bay 12 Games.
As I stated above this game boost a huge randomly created open ended world. Granted when you play you only worry about your own little piece of land, but that doesn't mean the world isn't moving around you. The basic goal of this game is to create a dwarf fortress. You start out with 7 dwarves and grow your empire from there. Over time more dwarves will join you in your quest of making an awesome fortress. At first I wasn't sure why people loved this game I didn't much into it until I started playing it. This game can just surprise you with how detailed it can get.
For a game that drawn with text graphics it really deep. Its certainly playable in its default state but it takes a while to figure out what all the symbols mean. I recommend grabbing one of the graphic packs for the game which replaces some of the odder symbols with icons that reflect what it is. There are many out there I would just find one that works for you. I can't say if this game would be better or worst with better graphics as its more involving when your imagination kicks in.
What the game may lack in graphics well makes up for it in game play. Its totally random and open ended. From my many hours of playing I don't think there is anything this game doesn't do. You have dwarf's go mad to creating legendary items. You have goblins who fly across the map when I dwarf hits it with a mace. You can create working traps and machines to help protect or kill your dwarves. Your dwarves can fall in love and go to war with each other. Its just amazing how much stuff goes on in this game. You basic goal is to create a thriving dwarf home. You can go all out and make a castle or just a simple hole in the ground. You can try to be self sufficient or rely on traders to get items you need for useless crap you have. If creating isn't your thing the game has an adventure mode which will allow you to explore the whole world. You can recruit members to your party and go on quests. I'm still amazed at what this game can do and provide.
If you were like me and thought Dwarf Fortress didn't sound fun, give it a shot its takes some time to learn the game but with a few tutorial and videos you will be created massive fortresses in no time. This game is a must have for every gamer out there. It doesn't require much to play but your time, which will just fly out the window when you get addicted.
