What is Free Play Friday. Well it’s a weekly article on free games out there in the world. The game could be casual flash games to Free 2 Play MMOs to free downloads. The only condition is you must be able to play the whole game without spending a cent to do so. So enjoy this week's Free Game, Runes of Magic. Runes of Magic is a MMORPG in the likes of World of Warcraft. Having checked out many Free-2-Play WoW clones over the years most of them just plain suck. Its either a grind fest or just plain old ugly and unplayable. Runes of Magic is not one of these games its looks very good and so far I haven't grinded at all.
This game is different from others in terms of your character. First you can have 2 classes. That’s right you can pick two different classes, they can be any class you want so they can compliment each other or be completely opposites. Also once you have a class you get to pick which skills you want to train up. This means no two characters will be the same as each could have different skills trained. I think this is a very interesting idea and really allows a player to create a character that they really want. The only bad part is you need to level up both of the classes separately. Well this isn't so bad as they took account of this in the game and you can easily visit a lower level area to quest and gain levels.
The game very much plays like World of Warcraft. Once you create a character you start to do quests to level up and explore the world. I decided to try playing a elf warden, which is nature guardian that uses nature to help fight. Basically a melee fighting pet class. This part of the game is very well done. Many things are explained as you quest in the starting area. Quests are plentiful as well so many in fact you will out level them quickly. Nothing special about the quest its your normal stuff. Though some quests need to be polished a bit more, there are many of them that tell you to talk to someone but don't tell you where they would be. Could be I was suppose to remember everyone I talked to beforehand or just an added element to the game. Either way I found it a big pain in the ass.
Looking around the starting area I can see why people compare it to WoW. Though in my mind its not quite up to WoW level of details houses and structures can cut into the ground. Some items just don't line up. Its not bad but it shows. Also the world here feels empty. There is lots of ground but very few items covering it. The graphics are good regardless of the small issues I saw. The game does look outstanding and I think the best thing to do is stop comparing it to WoW. I believe Runes of Magic can hold it own weight in being compared to AAA MMORPGs coming out these days.
This game is a breath of fresh air in the MMORPG market. Yes its like all other MMORPGs out there currently but it does enough stuff differently to stand apart from them. First its free to play. Secondly the unique duel class system and then making it skilled based. At first I wasn't sure I would like this game but the more I played the more it grew on me. Its grew on me so much its now part of my normal list of games I play. If you can spare the time grab this game and enjoy it just don't blame me if you are addicted to it in short order.
