This game comes from FutureMark you know the company that makes the tools people use to benchmark their gaming rigs. I know I've always been amazed at all the visuals in the benchmark program and its great that they take some that and created a game. Shattered Horizons takes place around the moon which was blown up. The playing field happen around the bigger chunks that are in orbit around what is left of the moon. At first you would think this is just your standard shooter but then you realize you are floating in space and totally control the way you are facing and turning. Normal FPS only require you to look at flat sections you would think is the floor while this game well any surface could be the floor. The control scheme takes some time to get use to but once you get the hang of it its an awesome experience.
Shattered Horizon is purely a multiplayer experience and well worth the $20 price tag on it. I've only played 3 different game modes and hoping there are more and I just haven't discovered them yet. So far the game modes are your normal ones. A Team Deathmatch, a Battlefield (Control Point) and an Assault mode. Being able to just about go anywhere and to have any orientation you want these game modes are more challenging. I just love defending a point while standing on the ceiling of a room while watching a teammate standing on one of the walls. Each of us is running around like we are both standing on the floor. The game offers 32 players battles as well as dedicated servers. Hopefully its possible to have larger battles as some of the maps are very large and could support it. FutureMark has stated they plan to release DLC later on for free. Hopefully its some more game modes as well as new maps.
Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing but you basically only have 1 weapon in the game. Its your standard machine gun, but it does have a few different modes to it. It can launch a grenade which can be chosen out of 3 different types. The first one is a Ice grenade which make a cloud of ice that hides you movement. A EMP grenade which can short out an enemies controls. While you are EMPed you can still shoot and move but you lose you crosshairs and can't turn as fast until your on board computer reboots. The last grenade is some sort of concussion grenade, not sure if it does damage but it does push players around very well. Its very useful to push pesky snipers out of their holes but the most fun is bouncing the enemy off the walls. You have only 4 grenades of any type per life, well I haven’t figured out how to get more yet.Lastly your gun and become somewhat of a sniper rifle. In this mode it shoots 10 bullets very quickly and if you are not set and lock onto a surface this will flip you around in the air when you fire. By the way it seems like your gun does have unlimited ammo so besides having to reload feel free to keep shooting.
The biggest downer for this game is its DirectX 10 or better only! So those players with XP sorry you will need to upgrade to play this game. I suggest you just skip Vista and grab Windows 7. Minus the operating system the miniimal specs are quite low for the game. Hopefully soon I will be able to grab some game play footage but as its DirectX 10 my recording program doesn't work.
