What is Free Play Friday. Well it’s a weekly article on free games out there in the world. The game could be casual flash games to Free 2 Play MMOs to free downloads. The only condition is you must be able to play the whole game without spending a cent to do so. So enjoy this weeks Free Game. This week its Counter Strike 2D. Yes that’s right Counter Strike in a top down shooter! It is all the CS glory with one dimension removed, Plant and defuse bombs, rescue hostages or escort the V.I.P.. There's also a construction mode in CS2D! Build walls, barbed wire and turrets to protect your base!
Counter Strike 2D was created by Peter Schauß / Unreal Software (http://www.unrealsoftware.de/). Over his 5 years working the game he added new maps, game types, a ton of weapons and the best part is a map editor with a Lua scripting engine to customize servers and game types. And this all fit into a 6MB download. This is job well done. The game plays well and is a total blast to play.
As to game play its play much like many top down shooters these day. Your WASD keys more your player around and you use the mouse to move your crosshairs. The rest is mostly CS keys. The biggest being "B" to buy equipment. Those of you who play CS know its something you want to do when you spawn so you can equip yourself for the battle. One thing that’s isn't very obvious is how to build turrets and wall. First select the wretch from your inventory. Then right click you will see boxes appear around you. Now right click again on one of those boxes and a menu will come up and you can select a wall or turret. See pretty simple.
Now you would think a game like this would have very few people playing but I would like to say you are wrong! The community looks like it pretty healthy with 200 or so servers and plenty of people playing on them. Being a noob on the servers I had no issues and everyone just enjoyed playing and didn't care about a noob like me joining. As I stated earlier its pretty easy game to into and in no time you will be getting massive kill sprees.
Looking at the update dates the game is updated a few times a year. Most of them have been bug fixes but I see a few where new features were being added. Wish it was updated more as there are some bugs/issues I had while playing with some lag and sound lag. Truthfully I can't really complain the game is free and its currently stable and the issues I experienced are not game killing.
