First off this is my first Superheroes Games. I never tried City of Heroes and never wanted too. Not sure why I tried Champions Online but something called me to it. I Guess I was looking for something new or something deep inside of me wanted to play a superhero, of course being able to play the Open Beta for free didn't hurt. After playing the open beta I wasn't disappointed, I totally enjoyed Champions Online.

The game plays well but I feel it still needs work nothing big just a bunch of small things. First the UI needs major help. Your basic "use" key is "Z" You use this to talk to people and interact with items in the world. It very awkward when playing. Its even used in fights to break holds. Not sure what is wrong with right clicking to talk and interact with items, but this method just sucks. My biggest complain is the choice of the key "Z" isn't the best key to use when you are using "WASD" keys to move. Equiping items and the tooltips are just confusing at first. After a while I understood what the slots mean and what can go where. Crafting as well wasn't clearly explained. I sorta know what the 3 different type of crafting does but have no clue what would be the best for certain characters. Granted I'm playing the beta and things could change when the game comes out.

I think the best part of Champions Online is the character generator. You could spend hours in here playing with all the options. You can pick default power choices for just about every superhero power there is. Or you can pick and choice powers from all over the large list making your own superhero with unique powers. Out of all the powers there are a few that seems to be the best and others just suck but I have a feeling these issues will be taken care of overtime with updates in the game. After picking your super powers you start the costume designer. If you can think of it you can make it that’s all I can say about it. The selection is just huge and I expect it will get bigger as the game grows. Looking at the selection and what other players have created I would wager that all known superheroes can be created in this game.

Once you have a character you start the game. You start out in a tutorial zone/Starter Zone. This happens in the major hub/city in the game, Millennium City, its under attack by some aliens. It takes about 20 minutes to complete it goes over all the features of the gameplay you need to know. It does your standard quests, a open type of quest and a instance quest. The open quest is an event that happens. People in the area when it starts are part of it. You get objectives as its goes along. When it is done all the heroes that were a part of it are graded and given items based on their performance. For the tutorial the open quest is defending and repairing a giant canon that’s under attack. When you are finish in the starting area you get to pick one of two places where you go to next to continue your superhero's story. I think it works pretty well but I will admit the starting area does get old once you done it a few times. Its needed though but I do wonder if they will give you the ability to skip it after a while.

So you are out of the starting area, at this point you get to head to the Power House where you get to train and power up your skills. I think the biggest and most interesting one is the travel power! They give you a bunch of travel powers to pick from so you can fit your character the best. You can fly in its various forms, teleport, super jump, web swinging, super speed and even tunneling. My only issue with the travel powers is flight seems to be the best. Doesn't matter how you fly just that you should. They tried to give extras to those who don't fly to help but just doesn't work well. I've tried super speed, and teleport powers and well the game becomes a pain with them. When running to do a quest you have to run by mobs who then aggro and then slow you down, what a pain. With flight you don't have to worry about them. Teleport allows you to fly in a sense but its limited you have about 5 seconds to move someplace before you come out of teleport. If you are out of combat you can instantly go back into teleport mode. But if you are unlucky and teleport into mobs well you have to wait 15 seconds before you can teleport again. So while its better than speed it does become a pain. Hopefully some of these issues will be fixed when the game comes out.

Overall the game is very enjoyable. I already put my order in for the game which comes out Sept 1st. It’s a fun game which can be played in small sittings. It still needs some polish but its already a gem in my book. It has some funny and interesting quests, some of them seemed to be pulled from cheesy comic books and others are your normal standard MMO type quests. Its also fun to see the real world easter egg quests much like World of Warcraft did. Well I will see you all Sept 1st look out for Cpt. Awol being there to fight crime and saving the world.
