Dungeon Fighter Online LogoDungeon Fighter Online (DFO) from Nexon entered Open Beta Sept., 22nd. I had a chance to see DFO at PAX 09 and was mildly interested in it. I figured I will give it a chance when came out to really play it. First let me explain what DFO is. DFO is an Arcade Style Fighter RPG MMO, wow that’s a mouth full. For those old enough, think back to the arcade games Double Dragons or Streets of Rage. You know the games we used to put quarter after quarter into and enjoyed. Now add on an RPG element and throw tons of players into the mix. You got DFO. The concept is pretty solid and works well. It is fun to have an old fashion beat-em up game. DFO is a free to play MMO meaning it cost you nothing to play this game but they make money through micro transactions in game for frilly stuff like hats and cool pets. This system seems to work out well in Asia and its no surprise its picking up steam in America.

First the game plays as one would expect its fast paced and a blast to play. The game fully plays on the keyboard with small use of the mouse. This works well but this game is really asking to be played with a gamepad. Right now it only supports a keyboard but I have been told they are looking into updating it to support a gamepad. The controls are simple and work well, I don't have much to complain about. Graphics on the other hand. Ok I know this game is meant to match those arcade fighters and it does wonderfully. Don't get me wrong I love the style but the game is at a fixed resolution and sometimes with a bunch of windows open feels crowded. Also once you take a game that’s sitting around 640x480 and blow it up to 1920x1200 it doesn't look as good anymore. I will admit they seems to have a widescreen mode so at least its not stretched when blown up. I am hoping they can take care of this issue in the future cause this is one of my only complaints about the game. You have 5 classes to pick from. The slayer, a swordsman that possesses a demon in one arm that allows him to cast spells. Yes not sure why an RPG type of game makes these decisions for you like it was really meant to be a single player game. The fighter, which is a fist fighter type of character. The gunner, who uses all sorts of guns to kill and maim. The mage, who uses spells. And finally the priest, who fights with his fists and a huge cross like weapon. As you expect all they all fight in different ways but they all get the job done. Fighting is much like those old arcade games I stated above. You got combos and special powers which help drop the enemies. You get graded for how well you do in combat and a better rating gives you more XP at the end. Your grade comes from how many times you been hit, how high your combos got to using special attacks at the right times.

Well Sadly the gold farmers have found this game and of course make up for probably most of the population in the game. This was expected but damn on one screen I saw 10 of them lined up and just spamming the general channel. All of them for different websites offering the service. At one point I found it funny cause with all the competition the prices dropped very quickly. And this would be complaint number 2, though it was expected. The last complaint is well everyone looks the same. You have 5 different classes to pick from and well no matter what class you pick the only customization you have is your name. So the end result is a mass group of people who look the same as you.

On the MMO side its the standard formula you get quests and you complete them. There is still some grind in the game buts for the early part of the game it is limited. Hopefully the grinding part of the game later on is little but this is an Asian MMO so its very well might be there. The game does have PvP and I expect this would keep the game alive for a while. You have 4 PvP modes. Brawl which is a free for all game basically be the last one alive. Team from 1v1 up to 4v4. Elimination Mode, Players are split into teams and they fight off 1 on 1 until someone dies and the next person on that team joins the fight. First team to be eliminated loses.

Not much else to say about the game it has its charm and the price is right. Its great game if your time is limited cause you can enter it for a dungeon or two at a time. Also doesn't get boring if you want to play it for hours at a time either. As I said if they allow you to increase the screen resolution and use a gamepad this game would be even better. If you have the time head on over to http://dungeonfighter.nexon.net to download the client and sign up for the game. I don't think you would be disappointed if you like the arcade fighting games as I did growing up. Checkout the screenshots below and the video section for some video that I captured of game play and the opening movie for the priest.
